PAN card is used for all the financial transactions and Aadhaar Card is also used at many places such as banks, the issue of passport etc. In a recent move, the government made it mandatory to use Aadhaar Card while filing for Income Tax and later on the government of India issued a notification stating that the people need to link the Aadhaar Card with the PAN Card.
In the press release, the government gave a deadline for the same and the government informed the people that the PAN card would be invalid if it is not linked to the Aadhaar Card. Hence if you have not linked the Aadhaar Card and the PAN Card, you may go through this document to know the procedure of linking the two cards.
Purpose of Linking PAN Card with Aadhaar Cards
- The first reason to do so is to prevent tax evasion. This would prove to be a more effective way to track down the tax evasion as it would be easy to keep a track of the people and their financial transactions.
- There are many people who have multiple PAN Cards and they are able to evade Income Tax with these multiple PAN Cards. After this initiative, it would be impossible to have multiple PAN Cards by the individual.
- The process will also make it easy to file the income tax as the details can be fetched with help of PAN Card as well as the Aadhaar Card.
Steps to Link PAN Card with Aadhaar Card
To link your Aadhaar Card and the PAN Card, follow the steps mentioned below.
The first step is to open the e-Filing Portal of the Income tax department. You can open the portal by visiting here https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home. Once the portal is displayed, click on ‘Register Yourself’ on the left hand side of the portal.
Now the page for the registration will be displayed. Select your category as Individual and click on On the next page, enter your PAN Number, Date of Birth, Last Name and First name. After entering all the details, click on continue button.
On the next page, more such details will be asked for and after entering all the details, click on the submit button. You are now registered to use the income tax e-Filing Portal.
In the next step, go back to home page and login to the portal with the registration details that you used in the second and the third step.
After logging in, click on Profile Settings from the top navigation bar and then from the drop-down list, click on Link Aadhaar. This will redirect you to a new page to link the Aadhaar card to the PAN number.
On this new page, enter your Aadhaar number, Date of Birth, Gender and then enter the captcha code before clicking on Link Aadhaar Button. On clicking the button, the Aadhaar card will be linked to your PAN Card and a completion message will be displayed.
